Kentucky Buck Cocktail

MERRY CHRISTMAS!! This recipe is an interesting mix, one I haven't seen before: bourbon, strawberry, bitters, and ginger. I'm not sure how it will turn out, but my son, the cocktail master, is going to give it a try.
Picture
INGREDIENTS
1 chopped strawberry
3⁄4 oz. lemon juice
1⁄2 oz. simple syrup
2 oz. Wild Turkey bourbon (we used Makers Mark)
2 dashes Angostura bitters
2 oz. ginger beer
Strawberry slice, for garnish

Muddle the strawberry, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add the bourbon, bitters and ice. Shake and strain into a tall glass filled with ice. Top with a floater of ginger beer (pour a little carefully on top), and garnish with the strawberry.

RATING: 2 stars
Part of the problem with this is the SUPER hot/sharp ginger beer. I do NOT recommend this brand - even by itself, it burns all the way down. But once you get past the floater, you can actually taste the drink. One of us gave it a 3, the rest a 2. It's just... odd. You could try a milder ginger beer or use ginger ale, or leave that off altogether. But for us, this isn't a keeper.

Blizzard Cocktail

When you've got a bottle of bourbon in the cabinet (or your stocking!), you have to try some recipes. Bourbon seems more cold-weather, like scotch, while our usual rum is better suited to those summery, tropical drinks. This recipe, the blizzard, has cranberry, too, so that's another winter plus.
Picture
INGREDIENTS
  • 4½ tablespoons bourbon
  • 1½ tablespoons cranberry juice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup

Shake all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with lots of ice. Strain over ice. Garnish with lemon if desired.

There were 4 of us, and 2 gave it a 4 -- those are the bourbon drinkers. For me, it was a 2 1/2 until a little more cranberry went in, but the lemon was perfect. For my husband, it was a 3 1/2, but he rarely drinks bourbon. So we were going with a 4, since the bourbon drinkers were the fans -- that seems fair. It is pretty boozy, so if you don't like to taste too much alcohol, you'll want to up the fruit and simple syrup.

Blizzard Cocktail - Warm in Winter

Blizzard cocktail ingredients
You gotta have a cocktail or two for New Years! Champagne gives me a headache and I rarely make it to midnight anyway, so the search was on for a good adult beverage for our small party. It's called the Blizzard, which seems an appropriate name - although I could do without any actual blizzards this year, thank you very much.

This is a simple, 4 ingredient cocktail, served in a highball glass. The measurements are odd - I've never seen a cocktail recipe measured in tablespoons before! - but nothing else is out of the ordinary.

4 1/2 tbsp bourbon (we used Makers Mark)
1 1/2 tbsp cranberry juice
1 tbps lemon juice
2 tbps simple syrup (make with equal parts sugar and water, boil til sugar is dissolved and cool)

cocktail shaker
The recipe didn't specify cranberry juice cocktail, so we used 100% cranberry juice.

Put all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake well.
Pour into a highball glass with ice.

Garnish with lemon.

We made the first one exactly as the recipe said. My husband took the first sip, and said, "WOW, it's like a whiskey sour. Sour." It was really sour! He added some more simple syrup and it was good. I made mine with about 3/4 tbsp of lemon juice, and it was better. We are wondering if maybe they used cranberry juice cocktail, which is a lot sweeter, instead of 100% cranberry juice. Or else we just had really tart lemons!

RP SERVINGS: It makes 1 cocktail per recipe.

RATING: 3 stars with the lemon juice tweak
This isn't a favorite, but it's good. It's not too different than an Old Fashioned, and you could use an orange wedge instead of lemon successfully, I think. Since 4 tbsp is 1/4c, we suggest using a measuring cup or jigger instead of worrying about tablespoons, which was messy. (1 tbsp = 1/2 oz, 2 tbsp = 1 oz, etc)
