My family was in the citrus business growing up, and it took me years to actually enjoy oranges (TOO MANY ORANGES!). But I always loved grapefruit. This cocktail isn’t one I’ve had often, but it should be one I like!
- 3 ounces of grapefruit juice (I used fresh squeezed ruby red)
- 1 ounce of vodka
- 1/4 ounce of lemon-lime soda or Lime La Croix (I used La Croix)
- Kosher salt for rimming
- lime disk or grapefruit wedge for garnish
Use the lime or grapefruit wedge to moisten the rim of the glass and dip it in kosher salt.
Put ice (carefully!) into the glass, and add the grapefruit juice and vodka. Top with a splash of lemon-lime soda/lime La Croix.
Stir, garnish, and enjoy!
RATING: 1 star as written, 4 when I doctored it (see notes below)

Ok, I really love salt. Potato chips, salted caramel, pickles… I especially love salty-sweet. And yes, I KNOW the name of this is a Salty Dog, so the rating is partly my fault because GOOD HEAVENS this was not even drinkable with the amount of salt that stuck to the rim. Wow.
Also, the addition of the soda/La Croix is a bad idea. Of course, not all juice tastes the same, and maybe my fresh-squeezed grapefruit was not super flavorful. (Tasted good to me, though.) That splash really diluted the whole thing and added nothing. I think traditionally, you’d add a little simple syrup to this, rather than a flavored watery drink, and that would be better.
TO FIX IT: I wasn’t going to just toss it, obviously! So first, I got all the salt off. Even with just a little on the rim, my palate was overwhelmed with SALTY and honestly, it was a bit like the gargle we used to get when we had a sore throat. (No bueno.) Second, since I couldn’t remove the splash, I added more grapefruit juice and more vodka – basically, I made a double, but without anymore La Croix.
I’d just make a grapefruit screwdriver and call it a day! It needs more vodka than this, I’d say 1.5oz vodka to 3oz grapefruit, stir, drink responsibly, and enjoy!
